Architectural Dialogues: South London Gallery
Return to AD home

For a long time the Camberwell art school in Southwark (not far from Alsop's Peckham Library and his art school building at Goldsmiths) has owned a simple terrace house adjacent to the oldest parts of the school which, in turn, are adjacent to the main, 1960s, building. These have now all been linked together and the South London Gallery, designed by 6A, is now located in the former domestic property. Everything is relatively small about this place, but the design manages to provide small gallery spaces in the house (topped by an artist's residence), add a new gallery space to the rear, create a courtyard in that area, a shop, and link to the Edwardian building. The Gallery is a refreshing place to visit and provides an all too rare alternative to London's corporate buildings. But ... the cafe can get crowded at the weekend and the gallery seems to have a fairly random policy re which parts are open when.
