Architectural Dialogues: Clapham Manorschool |
Return to AD home |
This school extension by dRMM is one that I like. Yes, a handful of classrooms and a lot of circulation may seem extravagant to some, but there is a liveliness, consideration and freshness that about this place that immediately attracts one's attention: quality. There is, for example, no comparison between the tenor and character of this work and that of Hadid's school in Brixton. Yes, the scales are utterly different, but Clapham Manor's marriage of old, Victorian building and this new pavilion block is refreshing. The overall design moves are simple and communicate a relaxed artifice that embodies a considerate keynote. Take, for example, the key motif of the cladding and how it seamlessly works both externally and internally. Overall, it is the equation of old plus new that is so much more satisfying that something entirely new: one obtains an easy feeling of continuity where it matters – where the young members of a community learn to be a part of an adult world of provision and order. |
