This new building designed by OMA for NM Rothschilds has been squeezed onto a tight site at Bank, in the centre of the City. Among it's notable neighbours are a church by Wren(St Stephen Walbrook, with which OMA claim there is an affinity between their towers!) and a new building by Foster (top right, above, with the curved roof) and there are others by Stirling, Tite, Soane, Lutyens, Baker, and et al around the corner (Bank: a place for the real architectural enthusiast.)
In essence, OMA have provided a simple equation of bottom / middle / top for New Court. The bottom copes with an urban situation of narrow streets and alleys and is an admirable achievement; the middle is offices and trading floors which strive to look like different buildings on the outside (a strategy employed by Piano at Central St Giles); and the top begins with a large terrace area topped by an executive / presentation suite for banking millionaires that has been nicknamed 'the television set'.
Allies & Morrison were the executive architects and the detailing is surprisingly good (including a slung stone ceiling at entry level). The glazing varies subtley, although it does include some strange diagonals introduced as decorative elements.
Buildings for bankers are unlikely to command attention, but this one is worth a visit.
